Oxford Pilgrimage

The sun shone brightly as we set out on our pilgrimage to Oxford, such a blessing. There was much to anticipate - new places to encounter, stories to uncover, and moments of quiet reflection waiting to unfold. As we journeyed together, our shared prayer was simple yet profound: that we might learn more deeply, grow in faith, and find joy in the fellowship of one another. With open hearts and expectant spirits, we stepped forward into this chapter of our spiritual journey.
Our first stop was Holy Trinity Church, just two miles from the centre of Oxford, though it felt as if we had stepped into a peaceful countryside setting. There, we were warmly welcomed by Adrian, who spoke engagingly about the church’s close association with C.S. Lewis. He shared how profound an impact Lewis had on both the life of the church and the wider Christian world.
We were able to view a specially commissioned ‘Narnia’ window and learn more about the legacy he had left behind, with the church continuing to welcome many visitors each year, many from abroad. We concluded our time together with morning prayer, before setting off once more, journeying onward into the heart of the city.
As we arrived in Oxford, we took time to enjoy lunch and soak in the atmosphere of this famous university city, so richly steeped in history. In the afternoon, we divided into two groups: one led by Jonathan, who took the longer route, and another led by Lauren, who guided us at a gentler pace.
Though our routes differed, the theme remained the same—the rich Christian heritage of Oxford, a legacy that not only shaped the past but continues to live on today. We visited several significant sites, beginning with a memorial to those who were martyred for their faith. Among the highlights was our visit to Balliol College, where we spent time in the chapel, reflecting on the deep spiritual roots of this historic place.
We ended all together again at a cafe, where we enjoyed tea, cake and scones!
It was day full of interest, with moments to reflect on our own faith......here's a quote from the
writing in 1965, of James Morris who reflected on the city’s remarkable legacy:
“For the past thousand years, peoples lives in Oxford have shaped the Church in England, and across the world. They have studied, taught, prayed, preached and even been martyred here. The pulpits, cloisters, lecture halls and common rooms have echoed to the sound of debate and discussion.”
As we journeyed home, a prayer that came to me was:
Gracious God, we thank You for the blessings of this day, for safe travels, shared moments, and all that we have seen and learned together. Thank you for the witness of those who have gone before us, for their faith, courage, and enduring legacy that continues to inspire.
As we journey home, we pray that the seeds planted today may take root in our hearts and grow in faith, hope, and love. Help us to carry with us the peace we have found, the fellowship we have enjoyed, and the truths we have encountered along the way.
Guide us safely on our return, and remain with us in the days ahead, that our lives may reflect your light in all that we do.
Amen.
