What a beautiful day we had, we left Ashtead on St. David's Day in fog and
by the time we reached our summit,
we were bathed in sunshine!
Our day began with prayer at Guildford Cathedral, led by Canon Mavis Wilson.... We then descended into Guildford town, stopping to pray together.
Prayer - Lord, give us all that we need as we set off on pilgrimage today, let us feel the good earth beneath our feet, may we travel unhindered by worldly possessions and distractions. Give us a sense of your joy as we celebrate your creation all around us. Keep us focused Lor, your hand guiding us over your holy ground.....as we are all held in your love. Amen
Then begin the long ascent of Pewley Down Hill, passing the Old Semaphore Tower. We pause several times as we climb to reflect on what we notice and how God is at work in us and around us. Once on the level again, we see a Buzzard overhead and feel the peace of nature as we walk steadily towards our destination. St. Martha's Church sits on the Pilgrims Way, 574 feet up, there's no road access and as we climb, we are grateful to see the Church looming ahead of us on the hill.
We are met by their Vicar David Oakden, who generously gives us his time and talks with us about the history and the faithful worshipping community. He also talks about the outreach of the church and how they welcome so many visitors, especially in the summer. David speaks to us about what he senses God is leading the congregation into at the moment, going deeper with God, as they worship, pray and live their lives....we end our time with prayer and a blessing.
Leaving the churchyard, with a clear 180 degree panoramic view across
Surrey........we descend down to Chilworth, where we are greeted by Shane from The Percy Arms. After lunch we cross over the road to catch the train back to Guildford, and walk back up to the Cathedral, ending our pilgrimage, and then make our way home.
Here are some comments from those who came on the pilgrimage:
'What a lovely pilgrimage you organised for us all. And how superbly you managed all the details........ I loved very minute.'
'It was wonderful to just to turn up knowing it was all organised, such a gift. I loved all of it, the walking and the times of reflection, the fellowship, the lunch to, and all that sunshine!'
Some of the thoughts we considered as we travelled along together.
As you set off, what is it that you are carrying that is weighing you down - personally, spiritually and in the world?
What bible passages resonate with you as you walk along?
At the end of the day, look back and remember one aspect that struck you most.....why was that and what might God be saying to you through it?
Do get in touch if you would like to know more or come on a pilgrimage.......Sharon
