St. Matthew Passion - is a dramatic telling of the Passion of Christ, it features some of Bach’s most beautiful and poignant chorales, alongside rousing and striking choruses. It is a work that The Bach Choir is renowned for; it is uplifting, moving and will stay with you long after the performance has ended.
It was a beautiful day as we travelled up to central London to The Royal Festival Hall. For some of us it was a return visit after hearing The Matthew Passion several times before, but for some it was the first time, so there was a sense of anticipation as we took our seats in the vast auditorium.
The Bach Choir numbered around 200 and singing with them was The National Youth Choir with 50 members. There were several soloists, special mention to Ed Lyon, who sang the part of the Evangelist, he was superb and everyone mentioned him afterwards. However, for me nothing will take away the beautiful and poignant way that The Bach Choir sing, powerful and yet sensitive, every word and phrase sung with meaning. The whole experience was worshipful and prayerful and will give all of us who went much to reflect on as we enter into Holy Week and towards Easter Day.
