The British Museum
The British Museum

We began in glorious sunshine, walking across Waterloo Bridge, expectant of what our day would bring.

As we walked we prayed that God might open up our hearts and minds to what we might encounter, hopeful that we would be on our own individual discover but conscious that we are walking with others, and that community brings much to us when we dare to enter into it fully.

Our guide at The British Museum was Julie Woods, who led us on a fast paced bible tour across many exhibits which showcased the seven empires of biblical history.

Some of the exhibits that we saw were - the Royal Game of Ur, the Rosetta Stone, the Assyrian Lion Relief, a Gilgamesh Flood tablet, the Cyrus cylinder, a bust of Caesar Augustus, and the  ‘Elgin Marbles’ from the Parthenon.

As the day was so popular, two visits were necessary and on both occasions we also visited two hidden chapels. The King’s Chapel of the Savoy, which was built as part of a charitable foundation under the terms of the will of King Henry VII in the early

sixteenth century. On 11 May 1937 King George VI commanded that it should be the Chapel of the Royal Victorian Order. Richard who is the Chapel Steward and Thomas the Chaplain spoke eloquently about the community who still worship here today.

We also visited The Fitzrovia Chapel, dwarfed by modern towers, which have been built on the site where the Middlesex Hospital once stood. Inside it has beautiful Byzantine architecture and although not used as a chapel today.....it is a place where you can step out of the busyness of London and be quiet for a short while.

It was a day full of things to absorb and people to encounter, here are some comments from those who came.

'Thanks for yesterday which was a fascinating, my favourite part was the BM'

'The Bible tour of the British Museum was a real revelation and the chapels were gems and quite different. Much to think about and enjoy. Thank you so much'

Thank you to all of you who came and contributed to such an interesting time......it was so good to journey with you all.
